Established in 2023, Chargers Baseball Academy was built to give San Antonio's youth ballplayers a true development path — not just a roster spot. Our coaching staff focuses on fundamentals, accountability, and competing the right way, with teams from 6U through 18U competing across Texas all year long.
Playing for the Chargers is the best option for cultivating a winning, yet positive attitude both on and off the field.
Every coach on our staff is a current or former college baseball player — it's the standard we built this program on, and it's what sets the CBA coaching experience apart.

Brett Brown
Founder
Brett is the Founder of Chargers Baseball Academy, where he has been dedicated to shaping the next generation of baseball players both on and off the field since establishing CBA in March, 2023. He has coached ages 8 through 18, specializing in pitching development and fielding. His experience comes from his time playing at Sinton High School, Texas State University, Wharton County Junior College, and St. Mary's University. He is currently pursuing his Juris Doctorate from St. Mary's University School of Law, expected to graduate May 2026.
Josh Malone
Director of High School Baseball Operations / Co-Founder
Josh has co-founded and coached CBA since March of 2023, with experience ranging across every age 8U–18U, now specializing in ages 15U–18U. The bulk of his experience is in pitching and fielding, as a dominant left-handed pitcher in both high school and college. Played at Canyon High School (First Team All-District, All-State senior year), St. Mary's University, then transferred to UTSA to earn his degree in Early Childhood Education.
Brett Atkinson
Coach
With 1 year of coaching experience, Brett specializes in hitting and fielding for ages 8U–14U, with experience across all ages and all areas of the game. Currently a college baseball player at Our Lady of the Lake, playing SS, 2B, 3B, and 1B. A 3-year varsity player at Canyon High School. Earned a B.B.A in Marketing and is currently working on a Master's in Cybersecurity. Brett is CBA's technology expert, helping the org run efficiently for parents and players alike.

Braeden Brown
Coach / Director of Recruiting & Youth Baseball Operations
Braeden brings 2 years of coaching experience in pitching, hitting, and fielding along with a strong record in recruitment and player development. A dedicated pitcher at St. Mary's University with 40+ strikeouts and two-time Lone Star Conference All-Honor Roll recognition. A 4-year varsity standout at Sinton High School, ranked #1 4A THSBCA pitcher in Texas, 3x 1st Team All-State Pitcher, and 2022 4A State Champion.

Tristan Moreno 'T-Mo'
Coach / Exercise Director
Moreno has experience coaching all ages with expert knowledge in exercise, conditioning, and discipline drawn from standout careers in track, football, and baseball. Currently playing at St. Mary's, a member of the Lone Star Commissioner's Honor Roll. Pursuing a Bachelor's in Biochemistry, with plans to take his competitive nature into a future career as a surgeon.
Dillon Lopez
Coach
With one year of coaching experience, Dillon specializes in hitter development and catching, drawing on his ongoing career behind the plate. Known for strong defensive skills and leadership, he helped lead O'Connor High School to the third round of the 6A playoffs. This season he carries a .326 batting average with 4 home runs, 2 triples, and 7 doubles. Pursuing a Bachelor's in Exercise & Sports Science.
Matt Gauna
Coach
With 1 year of coaching experience, Matt specializes in hitting and fielding. A lifelong left-handed hitter, he offers a unique perspective to young hitters finding their approach. Earned a spot on the Lone Star Commissioner's Honor Roll. Pursuing a Bachelor's in Exercise & Sports Science at St. Mary's University.
Justin Ortega
Director of Communications & IT
Coaching since 2023, Justin specializes in pitching and hitting, drawing from his career as a crafty pitcher with a tough defensive spirit. Earned spots on the Lone Star Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll and the 2023 D2ADA Academic Achievement Award. Justin is CBA's technology expert, handling communications, IT, and day-to-day operations to keep the org running efficiently for parents and players alike.
Javier De Alejandro
Coach
A left-handed pitcher and coach specializing in pitching and fielding development across all age levels. Nearly 300 collegiate innings between Our Lady of the Lake University and St. Mary's University, plus three summers with the Lethbridge Bulls of the Western Canadian Baseball League. A South San High School graduate and Red River Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete.
Kaleb Gauna
Coach — St. Mary's University
Kaleb has been coaching baseball for the past four years while also competing as a collegiate pitcher, throwing over 300 innings during his college career. Being both a player and coach has given him a unique perspective on what it takes to succeed on and off the field. His passion is helping athletes grow not only as baseball players but as young men, focusing on confidence, mental toughness, leadership, and accountability so players can handle challenges in the game and in life.
William Churbe
Coach — CBA Alumni, Founding Player
William is a founding player of Chargers Baseball Academy, making him the only coach on staff who is CBA alumni — he played on the organization's very first team. He'll be attending Texas A&M, commissioning into the United States Army as an officer, and will continue playing baseball with the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets Baseball Team while also staying involved with the org.

Isaac Hernandez
Coach — Dallas College Richland
Isaac is a former varsity baseball player from Sandra Day O'Connor High School, where he played four years at the varsity level, primarily at third base and second base. As a senior, he earned Third Team All-State honors with a .467 batting average. He committed to play collegiate baseball for the Dallas College Richland ThunderDucks, where he also played third base and second base. He holds an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice and specializes in hitting instruction, helping athletes build a strong, confident approach at the plate.
Kody Copeland
Coach — Texas State University
Kody is a dedicated basketball coach with three years of coaching experience and a strong playing background. He began his collegiate career at St. Mary's before transferring to Eastfield College, where he continued competing and developing his game. Kody is currently completing his bachelor's degree at Texas State University. His experience as both a player and coach helps him connect with athletes while focusing on skill development, teamwork, and helping players reach their full potential on and off the court.
